The subconscious is responsible for those memorable matches when you have clicked into "The Zone" - the mental state that delivers your peak level of racquetball.   

In the Zone, you feel like you can do absolutely anything out there - make any shot at any time, and feeling like nothing can possibly go wrong. 

When you are in The Zone, pretty much anything becomes possible on the racquetball court.

Your subconscious is an amazingly powerful mechanism which works almost exactly the same way as a computer.

It knows exactly what you need to succeed on court - the best shot to play (and how to play it), the correct strategy you need to implement, etc. 

Unfortunately many racquetball players know only too well that their conscious mind often does not fully allow this auto-pilot process of play to happen.  

Instead, it often fights to take control of your performance and is most often responsible for our worst performances on court.

Sometimes it even sabotages our strokes, confidence, causing missed opportunities, slumps in form, fear of success or failure, etc.  

Most often it just prevents us from being at our absolute best - getting in the way and holding us back from realizing our full potential. 

Players usually overcome this situation using a combination of mental training methods such as visualization, affirmations, hypnosis, etc.

These methods work powerfully as the mind controls the body, not the other way around - and so racquetball players who use mental training in their routine (as well as physical training) tend to move ahead faster than those who only train on court.

Mental training gives racquetball players that "slight edge" over their competitors in the areas of confidence and inner belief, and their ability to handle pressure and intimidation - and this transfers into confidence in their stroking ability and successful results. 

Players who uses both mental and physical training always tend to have the edge when competing against opponents of similar standard, who only use physical training.

The Power of Visualization

Visualization is one of the most powerful mental training methods used to transform performance at intermediate and elite levels of sport right around the world.

This involves regularly and realistically picturing in your mind the exact way you want to perform during a game, with aspects such as:

  • Mentally rehearsing all strokes to peak efficiency - such as down the line shots, cross court passes, wide angle passes, ceiling balls, kill shots, pinch shots, etc.

  • Serving strongly, accurately and consistently using drive serves, Z serves and lob serves

  • Solid footwork - reacting perfectly to each shot from your opponent, easily retrieving any ball they hit, attacking when possible and defending when appropriate

  • Moving your opponent around the maximum distance on court, playing good strategic racquetball

When used correctly, visualization has shown time and time again to bring major improvement to almost any area of a player's racquetball performance.

However there are several aspects which need to be done correctly in order to extract the best results. 

For instance, the correct level of relaxation is required to ensure the conscious mind is relaxed, as this opens up the link to the subconscious mind.  

Also, the visualized images need to be powerful, emotionally charged and realistic in order to make an impression within the subconscious.

Unfortunately the fact is that visualization is not always used positively - because most of us don't realize that we are actually visualizing all day long - a kind of unconscious visualization if you like.
