working with many runners over the
years I began to notice consistent
patterns with most runners and
many of the exact same experiences,
challenges and issues they all seemed
to be dealing with - such as:

The
reason why physical training alone
cannot always deal with these issues
is because they reside within the subconscious mind
- the automatic pilot side
of our running - which houses our
beliefs and "mental wiring".
When
we have a recurring issue in our
performance, it usually means we
have created a type of mental "belief" within
this area, which tends to
re-create the same issue for us again
and again until we finally deal with
it.
Mental training always delivers results in these areas because it deals directly
with the subconscious mind - and almost without exception, those
who train both their mind and their body seem to consistently get
an edge over their competitors who only do physical training.
How
Your Mind Works - and Tuning Your
Inner Computer To Success
Many
runners do not achieve the same times
in races as they achieve in their
training, and when this
happens regularly, they seem to realize quicker than
most other sports people that the
issue is a mental one, rather than
physical.
This
is because running requires
powerful mental resources and instills
a high level of self-awareness within
most runners.
Mental
training increases your use of the
all-powerful subconscious mind, and
this also happens to be the area which
helps runners click into their 'Zone'.
The
Zone is the mental state which achieves
the peak level of running performance -
and allows you to flow over the ground
more instinctively and automatically,
while your body receives near-perfect
instructions for your performance.
During
this time, the weaker conscious mind
is virtually shut down from commanding
your performance and is only required
to make some occasional tactical decisions.
This
is very important - because if your
body gets its instructions from the
weaker conscious mind, rather than
from the body's control center (subconscious) the
body's muscles contract and inhibit
performance.
The
subconscious mind is an awesomely powerful
mechanism which works almost exactly
the same way as a computer.
It
contains all your running memories,
knowledge and experience and
is designed to help you succeed in
whatever you do - but can also just
as easily work against us
if not programmed correctly.
When
self-sabotage occurs, it shows through
missed opportunities, lost confidence,
poor form, etc.
Having
a positive expectation of
success is important, because we
tend to get what we expect rather
than what we deserve - and
this is another area controlled by
our powerful subconscious.
The
methods of relaxation, visualization
and hypnotic suggestion are powerful
ways to influence your mind at the
deepest levels, and dramatically increase
success in your running.
But
most runners seemed to have trouble
using mental training without some
form of guidance - so I
created a hypnosis and visualization

or self sabotage in their
performance (which are very common
mental issues I work on with athletes)
are most often caused by the
athlete unknowingly visualizing
themselves to fail.
This is purely because every single one of the 60,000 thoughts we have each
waking day - including negative thoughts - are automatically converted into
a picture, or an image, within the subconscious. This is a form of automatic
visualization.
This
process is much like running
a constant movie though your mind all
day long without realizing,
which is programming your future results.
Making
sure the technique is being used positively
and correctly is the only way to ensure
the recurring patterns are overcome
and replaced with stronger performances.
Having
said that, many athletes also
use it who have no problems at all -
they simply want to improve their performances
even further.
When
it comes down to it, it's the mind
that controls the body -
but most athletes tend to see this
the other way around until they experience
a problem in performance and begin
to understand how the mind / body
connection works.
