No
problem! A massive number of gymnasts, coaches
and parents contact us each week about these
issues, and the good news is that mental
training gets consistently excellent
results in this area.
This
is because gymnastic fear can be overcome
only when dealt with right at
the very source - the
subconscious mind, so gymnasts can realize
their full potential and complete their
routines.
Other
methods only seem to create temporary improvement
because they do not work at the very core,
or control panel, of the body's movement.
Mental
training, using a potent combination of
visualization and hypnosis, has shown to
give gymnasts the inner confidence
and belief to conquer fear and
achieve the most difficult gymnastics elements
and routines, such as tumbling and reverse
movements.
Over the years, many concerned parents
and gym instructors have contacted me
to ask how their gymnast can overcome these
problems.
I
created many customized hypnosis programs
for gymnasts for fear of backwards movements,
and without exception, the results have
been outstanding.
These
included prime areas such as tumbling
moves like backhandsprings, back tucks,
etc - and I soon became highly
familiar with the pressure gymnasts experienced
in both practice and competition.
The
most important thing to know is that
these fears cannot be consciously
controlled - as they are a totally
unconscious, or sub-conscious,
reaction.
The
powerful subconscious mind also
happens to control all of your body's movements,
so it is the absolute control center
of all gymnastic movement and performance.
Your
subconscious is an amazingly powerful mechanism
which can easily command your body
perform the exact routine you wish your
body to perform (assuming you have
been given the right training).
It
normally uses an automatic form of 'auto-pilot'
which allows our movements to flow easily,
effortlessly and naturally.
However,
many gymnasts know only too well that your
conscious mind can prevent this subconscious
auto-pilot process from happening - by
bombarding it with doubts, fears and negative
thoughts during routines.
These
are where the problems can begin for some
gymnasts.
The
conscious mind is most often responsible
for the worst gymnastics performances
- sabotaging elements, routines, confidence,
and causing fear and slumps in form.
Most
often it just prevents us from being at
our absolute best - getting in the way and
holding us back from realizing our full
potential.
The good news is that this fear
can be overcome using a combination of
mental training methods such
as visualization, affirmations and hypnosis.
These
methods work powerfully as the
mind controls the body, not the other
way around - and so gymnasts
find they gradually gain the confidence
to again perform the routines that were
troubling them.
Benefits
of Mental Training in Gymnastics
Mental
training helps us to also create a new
mindset of success - an expectation
and inner belief that you will perform
each element and routine strongly every
time.
Most often these improvements are shown
in the areas of:
-
increased belief and inner confidence
in your ability to perform tumbling
or difficult movements
-
overcoming nerves,
intimidation and self sabotage
-
increased
consistency and concentration
in performance, in both practice
and competition
-
overcoming
negative thoughts, negative
self-talk, and lack of belief
in your ability
-
increased
gymnastic performances and results
|
Mental
training gives gymnasts that "slight
edge" in their ability to handle pressure
and negative thoughts - and this transfers
into confidence in their gymnastic performances
and successful results. To
